Since my previous video based project, the ‘Experience of Space’ in which I videoed the Planetarium structure in Bristol I have been keen to further explore the possibility of using mirrors in future work. I feel that it was an area that I couldn’t fully explore in the previous project which focused particularly on the medium of projections. However there are similarities between the projects in terms of the exploration of ‘reflecting reality’ as well as a continued interest in time and space relationships.

Initial inspiration for this project has come out of the world of fine art looking at artists such as Anish Kapoor, Francisco Infante-Arana and Nonna Gorunova and Robert Smithson (examples of his work shown above.) All of these artists use mirrors in various natural locations which appeal to me due to their beautiful contrasting structures and compositions, as well as the additional element of the reflections created.

I feel that there is further potential here within the medium of video to explore mirror’s existing in a series of environments. The medium allows an observation to continue over a period of time, in which the time and place should determine some unique outcomes.
