I was suggested to look at the work of Bill Viola by one of my dissertation tutors when we were discussing my growing interest in the experience of different mediums and trying to translate a certain feeling through a video. This has lead me to research further into Viola’s fascinating work which involves videotapes, architectural video installations and sound environments.

I admire the video below for many reasons. Firstly this piece completely transforms your perception of the medium’s ability to ‘edit’, the way in which you are ‘carried’ by the video is an unusual experience. You watch and wait before the figure finally jumps into the pool and when you least expect it the figure is frozen mid-air. The reflecting pool itself holds a meditative quality that distracts you as the figure above slowly disappears. It’s a thought-provoking piece that explores a few ideas I am very interested in – the experience of a real-life space, reflections and manipulation of time.
