I was more considered with the face-paint designs on this second male photo-shoot so I felt more confident with what movements and expressions would work well.

I feel that the flow of these sequences in a linear presentation is more successful. The more abstract sequences I think can be better understood when you compare them to the sequences with more obvious facial features above and below also. I scanned black paper for the background instead of pure black to compliment the collage feel of them. However I feel that I need to take more male photos in order to create a better comparative set of images.

Abstract Photographic Collage

After editing the photographs down to the ones with the best sense of movement I started to experiment on Photoshop with various means of cutting out parts of the image to create a sort of collage. I was really pleased with the effect of the cutout ‘masks’ on a black background as the shading and details of the faces were isolated and heightened. Something wasn’t quite right with the arrangement of the images at this point though and I had trouble knowing how to ‘divide-up’ the images.

I was more pleased with the results of the female photoshoot as I had finalised the facepaint designs that worked with and therefore heightened the power of the individual female expressions. The movement between individual photographic moments were also more successful.

After sketching various ‘male’ and ‘female’ expressions and creating abstract shapes that lend itself to that particular expression it was time to tackle the subject photographically. I decided to use my Lomography ActionSampler camera that takes four images in one second. I’m pleased with the more subtle male expressions created with the yellow abstract face paint shapes.
