El Mar. La Mar.

The starting point I have chosen from The Old Man and The Sea is the part that describes how the fishermen refer to the sea as either ‘La Mar’ when the sea is kind to them and ‘they love her,’ or ‘El Mar’ when they describe the sea as either ‘a contestant or a place or even an enemy.’

This description struck a chord with me from the moment I read it as quite simply an interesting idea. How something as mammoth as the ocean could have traits that we associate as either masculine or feminine.

This is when I started researching the differences between male and female brains, which as you can imagine brought up a lot of amusing articles but also some really interesting insights. ‘Beautiful Minds: A Little Matter of Gender’ is an interesting series of programmes I discovered on youtube where Scientists explore the difference between the brains of the sexes.

Females- E-Brain (Empathy)

Males- S-Brain (System)

Interesting discovery that autism could be described as an extreme male brain. Looking at things as systems.
